Runway Categories

To make airport planning more challenging and realistic has consideration been made for the introduction of runway categories. This could be a new runway or an upgrade options based on having a COO

It would be nice to see such runways as:

Non ILS - meaning in difficult weather aircraft couldn’t land (if weather such as snow and fog have been considered.)

Cat I - land with moderate weather conditions

Cat II - land in any weather conditions.

I know the above are not exact according to real life but it would become too complicated otherwise.

I look forward to the communities thoughts.

There are 2 runway sizes: small and large. Each runway can be upgraded with i.e. papi

Actually it is not true anymore. Runways will be upgradable

Upgrading runways feature is present from quite a time… Cause Devs have been mentioning it quite a times. Still i am not sure.

According to the dev log there are 2 runway sizes. Both can be upgraded, but the smaller cannot be upgraded into the bigger one. Which is what i said in my previous post

So it means that we will have to destroy the small one to build the big one?? Is this the way it happens in real life??

Small runways should be upgradable to big one… At reduced cost (80% of original??).

I am not sure how they do in other countries but in mine, government will close down an airport for improvements

Its great to hear that runways will be be available to upgrade in terms of size, i guess that was to be expected, but what about the specific equipment or requirements runways have in order to land aircraft during certain weather situations.

For example fog. Unless your runway is suitable to facilitate aircraft to land in those conditions maybe they should (this could be linked into events) and cause delays etc and be problematic for your airport in the short term.

Each of the runways will be upgradeable with - among other things papi and such. Night flights are indeed not possible without the correct equipment

Fantastic

I know you can close down a runway, so just close it down, all the gates and such and replace the runway, boom you just fixed the issue.

ĆYou would be amazed at what qualifies as “lighting” in some countries - in fact a lot of places in Europe still get affectionately compared to “landing in the black hole of Calcutta” - you get runway edge lights and thats it - and hopefully they are on brighter than dim.

Still - in one subcontintental airfield -
“Well I can see the terminal, now where’s the runway”
Shortly followed by:
“Go around” - when the landing lights finally illuminate the damn thing too late to make the touchdown zone…

As an aside - the MSA was 21000ft and the runway elevation was approx 3000ft

Also in terms of upgrades - all you do is paint yellow lines round the potholes and issue Notams saying where/how big they were last week.

Absolute minimum at night is edge lights, As for approach aids, if its turned on its a bonus, I’ll take a working NDB in Africa thanks.

For depth maybe allow airport funding (later on) - in ascending order of accuracy
NDB, VOR, NDB DME, VOR DME, GNSS, GNSS(AR), PAR(talkdown), ILS, ILS Cat II, ILS Cat III

You can also sidestep off an ils which can get it to cover multiple runways, with equivalent minimums to a VOR
