So IRL, as far as I know, some airports lease there gates to airlines, in the sense that the airlines plan the flights how they want, but they pay for the flight, as well as the privilege. Cheap airlines would cram as many flights as they could into one gate.
Stay tuned, the contract system is getting an overhaul, which will make planning flights fundamentally different!
